James Fleming founded the distillery in 1879. As a grain merchant, he had already established business relationships with whisky producers. The name dates back to a brewing and bottling business founded in 1854. Rupert Patrick, a great-great-grandson of the founder, revived its whisky tradition. Drawing on historical business ledgers and a surviving bottle from the 1940s, he worked with Master Blender Norman Mathison.
