Special features: The Port Charlotte 18 years is a limited edition with only 8,000 bottles worldwide. It was fully distilled, matured, and bottled on the island of Islay from 100% Scottish barley. The maturation took place in a combination of first-fill bourbon casks (53%), second-fill sherry casks (31%), and a unique method where 16% of the distillate initially matured for 11 years in sherry casks, then transferred for five years to virgin French oak, and finally refined in second-fill bourbon casks.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Inviting aromas of dried fruits, including figs, sultanas, and plums, combined with the characteristic earthy peat smoke.
- Palate: A harmonious blend of dark brown sugar, fresh vanilla, and heather honey. Notes of apricot jam and red fruits complement the smoky, BBQ-like character of the whisky.
- Finish: Long and complex, with layers of oak, spices, and lingering peat smoke.
Distillery/Bottler: The Bruichladdich Distillery, founded in 1881 on the Scottish island of Islay, is known for its innovative approaches to whisky production. After a six-year closure, the distillery reopened in 2001 and has since produced a variety of bottlings, including the peated Port Charlotte whiskies.
