Special Features:
The 40-year-old CRN57 is a blended malt Scotch whisky bottled at 43%. It belongs to a range of older blended malts conceived as a preview of the flavour profile of The Cairn’s future single malts. Its name refers to The Cairn’s location at 57 degrees north in Cairngorms National Park.
Rich sherry notes open with cinnamon, nutmeg, beeswax, dried fruit and orange peel, followed by dried tobacco, citrus, charred oak, stewed apple, walnut and peppery spice. Mature oak and roasted coffee beans shape the nutty finish.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, rich sherry notes mingle with cinnamon and nutmeg, beeswax, dried fruit and orange peel.
- Palate: The whisky is smooth and sweet on the palate, where dried tobacco, citrus and charred oak meet stewed apple, walnut and peppery spice.
- Finish: The finish is long and nutty, shaped by mature oak and roasted coffee beans.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Cairn Distillery opened near Grantown-on-Spey in October 2022 and is the second distillery owned by the family-owned company Gordon & MacPhail. As its first single malts are not expected to appear until the mid-2030s, the CRN57 range bridges the intervening years with older blended malts that anticipate the intended house style.
Gordon & MacPhail bottles the 40-year-old CRN57. The malts in the blend come from older stocks from other distilleries, whose identities have not been disclosed.
