Californian orange adds to this edition’s combination of citrus fruit, Asian botanicals and Gunpowder tea. PJ Rigney found the inspiration on a trip to the American West Coast, north of San Francisco Bay. Back in Drumshanbo, he developed a variation of Gunpowder Irish Gin that combines its familiar botanical composition with a pronounced orange character.

Production combines two methods: eight botanicals are slowly distilled by hand in copper pot stills, while four others release their aromas through vapour infusion. Californian orange complements this recipe, which also includes juniper and green Gunpowder tea. The gin is offered at 43% alcohol in a bottle containing 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fresh orange peel and juniper meet the earthy note of Gunpowder tea.
• Palate: The gin feels smooth and zesty on the palate. Juicy orange and other citrus notes mingle with botanical flavours and a hint of spice.
• Finish: The finish is long and refreshing, leaving a sweet, zesty orange note.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Shed Distillery is located in Drumshanbo in Ireland’s County Leitrim, beside Lough Allen and at the foot of Sliabh an Iarainn. PJ Rigney chose this rural setting for a distillery where he could work with grain, Irish plants and botanicals from other parts of the world. Together with Denise Rigney and the distillery team, he began whiskey production there in December 2014.

The stills were custom-built for The Shed Distillery by Arnold Holstein in Germany. Of the five copper pot stills, two are used to produce Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin and three for whiskey production. There are also two copper column stills for vodka. For the gin, Rigney combines Irish plants with Asian botanicals, drawing inspiration for the different editions from his travels.
