The Panda Conservation Edition puts the classic Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin at the service of panda conservation. Its gold-decorated ceramic bottle gives this special edition a distinctive appearance. Part of the sales proceeds goes through the Sichuan Green Foundation towards protecting giant pandas and their habitat. The partnership particularly supports local communities whose members care for the animals in the Giant Panda National Park.

Inside, the established recipe remains unchanged: twelve botanicals combine juniper and spices with fresh citrus fruit and Chinese Gunpowder green tea. Eight botanicals are slowly distilled in copper pot stills; lemon, lime, grapefruit and tea release their aromas through a separate vapour basket. This brings together two methods of extracting flavour. The edition is offered at 43% in a 0.7-litre bottle. For a gin and tonic, a mild tonic water and grapefruit zest or lime complement its citrusy, spicy character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fresh citrus notes mingle with juniper and green tea on the nose. Delicate herbal notes complement the aromas. The juniper has a subtle sage-like quality.
• Palate: Lemon and grapefruit meet juniper and tea on the palate. Subtle spice complements the refreshing flavour. On the mid-palate, the green tea recalls jasmine tea. Towards the end, the flavour becomes sweeter, with spicy and herbal notes: subtle anise and cardamom emerge, while meadowsweet contributes delicate hints of honey and vanilla.
• Finish: The long finish is dry and balanced. A fresh hint of tea with a lightly floral accent lingers.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Shed Distillery is located in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, beside Lough Allen and at the foot of Sliabh an Iarainn. PJ Rigney founded the distillery, which began operating in 2014. His travels and exploration of Asian fruits, herbs and spices shape the development of Gunpowder Irish Gin. The team combines international botanicals with Irish ingredients and uses copper pot stills of a historical design. Slow, manually controlled distillation and additional flavour extraction through the vapour basket are part of the gin's production.
