Special Features:

This Ardmore matured for 35 years in a Refill American Hogshead. Distilled in 1987, the single malt was bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in 2022 for the Connoisseurs Choice Cask Strength range. The previously used hogshead, number 2898, yielded 171 bottles at a natural cask strength of 57.1%.

The whisky has no added colouring, is non-chill-filtered and comes in a premium box. Its character brings together citrus and tropical fruit with sweet accents, oak and smoke.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Sweet lemon and lime aromas give way to subtle white chocolate. Fragrant floral notes, pressed apple and pronounced smoke add to the nose.
  • Palate: The whisky feels smooth on the palate and displays vibrant tropical fruit. Pineapple and guava are followed by delicate marshmallow notes. Desiccated coconut then develops, accompanied by toasted almonds and oak.
  • Finish: The long finish is medium-bodied. Citrus fruit remains present, accompanied by gentle vanilla.

Distillery/Bottler:

Adam Teacher founded Ardmore in 1898 near Kennethmont in Aberdeenshire. Its location beside the railway made it easier to transport materials from Glasgow to this remote Highland site. The water still comes from natural springs on Knockandy Hill. Peat from Aberdeenshire contributes to the distillery's smoky house style and differs in character from the maritime peat used by island distilleries.

Gordon & MacPhail is the independent bottler of this whisky. Established in Elgin in 1895, the company takes new-make spirit from Scottish distilleries and selects suitable casks for its maturation. It works with Speyside Cooperage to source North American ex-bourbon casks. George Urquhart developed Connoisseurs Choice in the 1960s, when blended whisky dominated the market. The range made malts available from distilleries whose whiskies had not previously been offered as single malts, placing their individual character centre stage.
