Special Features:

This Caol Ila spent its 38 years of maturation in a Refill American Hogshead. Distilled in 1984, the Islay single malt comes from cask 3122 and forms part of Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice range. Refill means a cask that has already been used to mature whisky.

The whisky was bottled on 23 March 2023 at its natural cask strength of 53.3%. The single cask yielded 150 bottles. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured; the 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pineapple, mango and banana mingle with smoke.
• Palate: The palate opens with notes of cured meat, followed by pear, lime and mint leaves.
• Finish: The long finish leaves citrus notes and an impression of campfire embers.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caol Ila stands in the northeast of the Scottish island of Islay, beside the strait of the same name. Its Gaelic name refers to the Sound of Islay. Founded in 1846, the distillery was rebuilt in the early 1970s. Its six stills were faithfully replicated to preserve the familiar distillery character.

Gordon & MacPhail is the independent bottler behind this release. The family-owned company from Elgin has been maturing Scotch whisky since its foundation in 1895. Over the decades, it sent its own casks to distilleries to be filled with new-make spirit, then stored them either at the distilleries or in its warehouses in Elgin. An extensive collection of whisky samples helps the company compare how different spirits and casks develop and make decisions about maturation.
