Special Features:

This Private Collection release brings together 74 years of sherry-cask maturation and the coronation of King Charles III. The Glen Grant was distilled on 10 April 1948 and filled into First Fill Sherry Butt number 1365, placing its origins in the year of the King's birth. Gordon & MacPhail matured the whisky until 15 December 2022: the bottling date falls exactly 74 years after the King's christening. The edition was released to mark his coronation on 6 May 2023.

The whisky from this single cask was bottled in 281 hand-blown crystal decanters. Despite its long maturation, its natural cask strength is 50.4%. It is bottled without chill filtration or added colouring and presented in a premium box. Its character combines spiced fruit with citrus freshness, milk chocolate and a subtle smoky nuance.

To accompany the release, Gordon & MacPhail donated £25,000 to the Prince’s Foundation. Among its activities, the foundation supports education in traditional arts, heritage crafts and horticulture, as well as community development projects.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose combines festive spices with warmed, spiced berries and a hint of raisins. Lemon zest stands out distinctly, joined by Demerara sugar and a delicate note of beeswax polish.
  • Palate: Red apple, bitter orange and milk chocolate come together on the palate. Subtle smoke develops as the flavours unfold, accompanied by fresh peppermint leaves.
  • Finish: The finish feels full, with lingering grapefruit and mature oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Grant is located in Rothes in Speyside and was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant. From 1872, James ‘The Major’ Grant shaped the distillery's development. He expanded the operation and introduced tall, slender stills and water-cooled purifiers. These devices for purifying vapours are among the distillery's technical features. He also created the Victorian garden in 1886, bringing together plants and fruits from his travels.

Gordon & MacPhail was responsible for the maturation and independent bottling of this edition. The company grew out of a grocery business established by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Elgin in 1895. A central part of its work is carefully matching spirit and cask: Gordon & MacPhail takes new-make spirit from various Scottish distilleries and selects suitable oak casks for it. For its current cask sourcing, the company commissions sherry casks in Jerez, made to its own specifications and seasoned with sherry. Decisions on when to bottle draw on maturation expertise developed over four generations.
