Special Features:

Seven decades in a single First Fill Sherry Butt define this jubilee bottling from Gordon & MacPhail’s Private Collection. Distilled at Glen Grant on 26 January 1952, the whisky spent its entire maturation in cask 381. It was bottled on 6 February 2022 to mark 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, exactly on the anniversary of her accession to the throne.

The cask yielded 256 bottles at a cask strength of 52.3%. This dark-gold Single Malt is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a premium box.

To accompany the release in 2022, Gordon & MacPhail donated £20,000 to Trees for Life. As part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, the company supported the Scottish conservation organisation’s nursery, where rare and native trees are grown from seed.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose initially recalls beeswax polish before honey-sweet ripe figs, toffee and orange peel emerge. Aged leather complements notes of rum and raisins.
  • Palate: Cooked blackberry compote, sweet clementines and milk chocolate come together on the palate. Dried tobacco leaves and a subtle menthol note then join them.
  • Finish: The long finish reveals a light smoky note and a hint of pepper.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Grant is located in Rothes in Speyside and was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant. Its water comes from the Caperdonich Well. Distinctive features of the distillery’s present-day equipment include its unusually shaped stills and the devices known as purifiers fitted to their lyne arms. These contribute to the light, fruity house style, which this bottling’s decades of maturation in a sherry cask complement with pronounced mature aromas.

Gordon & MacPhail began in 1895 as a grocery, wine and spirits merchant in Elgin. John Urquhart expanded the selection and maturation of whiskies from local distilleries and passed his knowledge on to subsequent generations. The independent bottler’s approach includes carefully matching spirits with its own casks, made to defined specifications. For the Private Collection, members of the Urquhart family select particularly long-matured Single Malts from well-known, lesser-known or closed distilleries.
