More than six decades in a single First Fill Sherry Butt have shaped this Glen Grant. The third edition of Mr George Legacy comes from cask 3665 and honours George Urquhart, an early advocate of bottling single malts in their own right. The whisky was distilled on 15 October 1959 and bottled after 63 years on 2 November 2022. For this release, Gordon & MacPhail used its last remaining cask from the 1959 vintage.

The vintage also preserves a historical production style: Glen Grant was then using direct-fired stills and producing a lightly peated spirit. A subtle smoky note complements the fruity, spicy character here. The 368 bottles were filled at a natural cask strength of 56.5%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

A family tree on the label, box and certificate highlights the passing down of the family's legacy. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, autumnal spices mingle with sweet dried fruit and Demerara sugar. Gentle citrus peel notes emerge, accompanied by beeswax polish and walnuts.
• Palate: On the palate, stewed red fruit gives way to bitter Seville oranges, complemented by a hint of garden mint. Tart raspberry notes then develop alongside cocoa powder and mature oak.
• Finish: The finish feels full, with lingering cinnamon and forest fruits.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Grant is located in Rothes in Speyside and was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant. After taking over in 1872, James “The Major” Grant expanded the distillery and introduced tall, slender stills fitted with water-cooled purifiers. These additional devices for purifying alcohol vapours remain a distinctive feature of distillation at Glen Grant today.

Independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail was responsible for maturing and bottling this edition. Based in Elgin, the family business has built relationships with Scottish distilleries over generations and matures their spirits in its own casks. George Urquhart joined the company in 1933. He championed single malts at a time when much of the production went into blends, and also allowed the whiskies unusually long maturation periods. Glen Grant was his favourite malt; the Legacy series draws on this connection and his long-term approach to cask maturation.
