Special Features:

This Mortlach matured for 33 years in a Refill American Hogshead and forms part of Gordon & MacPhail’s Connoisseurs Choice series. It was distilled on 16 November 1988 and bottled from cask 4594 on 25 November 2021. The single-cask release yielded 213 bottles at a natural cask strength of 53.8%. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Fruity citrus notes, honeyed sweetness and pastry shape the character of this long-matured release, with subtle spice adding to its profile. The whisky is presented in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Ripe red apple, clementine and honeycomb come together on the nose. Sweet Demerara sugar notes give way to watermelon and a hint of grapefruit.
• Palate: The palate opens with lemon sherbet and poached pear, followed by meringue. Notes of Key Lime Pie, a lime pie, also develop alongside subtle black pepper.
• Finish: The finish has moderate intensity, with citrus notes and subtle spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mortlach was founded in Speyside in 1823. George Cowie and later Alexander Cowie shaped the distillery’s development; Alexander introduced the unusual 2.81-times distillation process that is still used there today. It produces a robust spirit with a distinctive character. The distillery is also known as the Beast of Dufftown.

Gordon & MacPhail is the independent bottler of this Mortlach and had the whisky matured in Hogshead 4594 before bottling it. The family business has its roots in the shop on South Street in Elgin, established in 1895. Its single malt expertise has been passed down through four generations. The cask-strength releases in the Connoisseurs Choice series include both single casks and small batches and are bottled without chill filtration.
