Special Features:

This Tormore spent its entire forty-year maturation in a Refill Sherry Puncheon. The sherry cask, previously used to mature whisky, bears the number 8025101. The whisky was distilled on 15 June 1983 and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for the Private Collection on 15 August 2023. The single cask yielded 675 bottles.

The whisky is bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.6%, without added colouring or chill filtration. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, stewed raisins and clementine mingle with subtle marzipan. Gentle clove spice gives way to dark cherry and a hint of anise.
  • Palate: On the palate, lively, tart raspberry notes meet toasted almonds and delicate lemon zest. Dark chocolate emerges alongside grapefruit and charred oak.
  • Finish: The long finish remains spicy, with red fruits and tannins lingering.

Distillery/Bottler:

Tormore distillery stands in the Cromdale Hills of Speyside. Its distinctive architecture was designed by Sir Albert Richardson and includes stone balconies, a copper roof and a musical clock. The distillery draws its water from the Achvochkie Burn. For decades, a large share of its production went into blended whiskies, while Tormore was only occasionally available as a Single Malt.

Gordon & MacPhail began in Elgin in 1895 as a grocery, wine and spirits merchant. John Urquhart expanded the selection and maturation of whiskies from local distilleries. Together with his son George, he further developed the careful matching of spirit and oak cask, building stocks intended to mature for decades. For the Private Collection, the directors, including members of the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family, select special casks from these stocks. Tormore produced the whisky used here; Gordon & MacPhail is responsible for this independent bottling.
