Ironclad The Old Kernel Straight Bourbon

Special features: This Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from rare heirloom Indian corn from Pungo Creek Mills on the Eastern Shore of Virginia – a corn variety that has been cultivated in the same region since 1870. The story began in 2007 when farmer Bill Savage acquired a handful of this special corn. Originally intended for chicken feed, he discovered its exceptionally sweet aroma when ground. The first cornbread quickly became a legend – and ultimately the basis for a unique bourbon.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Warm notes of lemon pepper and freshly popped popcorn, spicy and inviting, with a creamy, buttery depth.
  • Palate: Silky and full of buttery shortcrust pastry. The corn is clearly in the spotlight, accompanied by sweet and savory baking spices. Candied lemon zest brings freshness, a hint of oak pepper spice.
  • Finish: Long and rich, carried by lemon cream, cinnamon, and fine rye spice. A creamy sweetness lingers on the palate.

Distillery/Bottler: The Ironclad Distillery Co. was founded in 2015 by Stephen King and his son Owen in Newport News, Virginia. The name "Ironclad" refers to the historical armored warships of the 19th century that were built on the James River near the distillery. All production, from mashing to bottling, takes place under one roof to ensure continuous control and minimize flavor loss.
