Special Features:

This single malt brings together malty sweetness and a restrained peat-smoke influence. The whiskey matures on Achill Island in County Mayo in casks with a peat-smoke influence. The island’s bog landscape inspired this whiskey, which is distilled, matured and bottled on Achill Island.

Its cask strength of 60% contrasts with its gentle smokiness. Alongside sweet malt and caramel, creamy vanilla and hazelnut form part of its flavour profile. It is bottled without chill filtration or added colouring, and the bottle contains 0.7 litres. The whiskey carries no age statement.

In 2025, this whiskey won a silver medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and was named best peated Irish whiskey at the Irish Whiskey Awards.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Gentle peat smoke emerges on the nose.
• Palate: Sweet malt and caramel open the palate. Delicate smokiness then develops.
• Finish: Herbal notes mingle with smoke on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Achill Island Distillery is located in Bunnacurry on Achill Island, off the west coast of County Mayo. John McKay founded the distillery in 2019. Following his death in 2020, his sons Michael and Seán continued the family business. The distillery combines single malt and single pot still whiskey production with maturation on the island, whose climate is shaped by the Atlantic and moderate temperatures.

Long fermentation times are part of its production approach: fermentation in the seven fermentation vessels lasts seven days in winter and five days in summer. The water comes from Lough Corrymore and is naturally filtered through quartz sandstone and amethyst on its way to the distillery.
