Special Features:

In Blackwater Wexford Strawberry Gin, strawberries are part of the distillation rather than simply being added afterwards for flavour. Thirteen botanicals are used in total, with strawberries making up the largest quantity. They are grown near Enniscorthy in Ireland’s County Wexford and transported to the distillery under refrigeration.

After distillation, further strawberries are steeped in the gin. This gives it its pink colour without added colouring. No sugar or other sweeteners are added either. The gin is bottled at 40% alcohol and is offered here in a 0.7-litre bottle.

For a gin and tonic, serve it with plenty of ice, fresh strawberries, three to four basil leaves and a little freshly ground black pepper.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Strawberries lead on the nose with a sweetish note. Juniper remains subtly perceptible in the background.
• Palate: Citrus notes appear first on the palate, followed by strawberries. Juniper and further spicy notes then come forward.
• Finish: The spice becomes more pronounced on the finish. A subtle strawberry note remains in the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Blackwater Distillery was founded in 2014 and is located in Ballyduff Upper in West Waterford, beside the River Blackwater. The distillery occupies a converted hardware shop dating from the 1950s. Alongside gin, it produces vodka and traditional Irish pot still whiskey. Guided tours allow visitors to discover production in progress and taste the spirits on site.
