Special Features:
Fresh rhubarb and blackberries from County Down give Copeland Rhuberry its fruity character. Sourced from local farms, the fruit is first steeped in alcohol with other botanicals for 16 to 24 hours. The mixture then goes into the 300-litre copper column still, where further fruit and botanicals are added before distillation.
After distillation, the gin is diluted with water to 37.5%. It rests for two weeks before being bottled and labelled by hand. Rhubarb and blackberry add a slightly sweet fruit note to its juniper character. The bottle contains 0.7 litres, and no colouring is added. A blackberry and a piece of lemon peel make suitable garnishes for a gin and tonic.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, juniper and clearly discernible cinnamon mingle with sweet-smelling rhubarb and blackberries.
- Palate: Fresh blackberries and rhubarb lead on the palate. Berry sweetness rounds out the rhubarb's tartness, giving the gin a smooth, refreshing character. Subtle juniper and hints of cinnamon and coriander complement the fruit. Towards the end of the palate, the gin feels full-bodied: juniper remains present, and the fruit becomes even more pronounced.
- Finish: The finish is rounded and slightly sweet, while retaining a classic gin character.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Copeland Distillery is located in Donaghadee, County Down, Northern Ireland, close to the historic harbour. Its development was supported by a crowdfunding campaign in 2016: more than 370 people contributed a total of £30,000. Following nine months of renovation, the distillery established its permanent home in a former cinema and the former premises of the Ards Bottling Company.
The distillery's equipment includes three custom-made copper stills named Betty, Hessie and Pam. Their names honour founder Gareth Irvine's grandmothers and mother. Its ties to the surrounding area are also reflected in its ingredients: Copeland sources fruit from farms in County Down and uses selected wild-growing botanicals across its range. The offshore Copeland Islands and the history of the harbour form part of the brand's background.
