Special Features:

The second edition of Lakeview Single Estate Whiskey brings together grain grown on the family estate by Lough Leane and maturation on that same estate. Its mash contains malted and unmalted barley as well as oats. Some of the estate’s barley was malted in small batches, and Great Northern Distillery distilled the whiskey to Wayward Irish Spirits’ specifications. It then returned to Killarney to mature.

The whiskey spent most of its maturation in former Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux casks. Ten percent received a three-month finish in casks previously used for peated whiskey. Grassy, earthy and barley notes join the honeyed fruit; the mouthfeel is full and creamy, while the smoke remains subtle. The second edition was bottled at 46% alcohol, without added colour or chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Cherries emerge on the nose, accompanied by honey and hints of spice.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whiskey is full-bodied and honey-sweet, with fruit and a very light smoky note.
  • Finish: Fruit and spice linger through the long finish, joined by subtle smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

Wayward Irish Spirits is part of O’Connell Heritage Limited and is led by Maurice O’Connell. For Lakeview, he has the estate’s barley distilled outside Killarney at Great Northern Distillery. His company oversees maturation and bottling at Lakeview Estate. “Single Estate” thus refers to where the barley is grown and where the whiskey matures.

Wayward Irish Spirits uses an approximately 300-year-old stone building on the family estate near Killarney as a cask warehouse. Changes in temperature and humidity there affect the interaction between whiskey and cask. Founded in 2017, the company also matures, finishes and blends sourced Irish whiskeys alongside its work on Lakeview.
