Micil Long Walk brings together grain and malt whiskey from three cask types: port wine, ex-bourbon and virgin oak, meaning previously unused oak. The blend takes its inspiration from Galway’s Latin Quarter. Sweet vanilla and toffee notes meet orange peel and gentle peat smoke, while spicy almond notes linger in the finish.

The recipe comprises five components: 60% grain whiskey from bourbon casks, 20% grain whiskey from virgin oak casks, 10% grain whiskey from port wine casks, 8% double-distilled malt whiskey from port wine casks and 2% peated malt whiskey. Nutty malt notes and mild spice also contribute to its character. The whiskey is bottled at 43%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals delicate notes of dried orange, accompanied by a woody note reminiscent of sawdust and toasted oak.
• Palate: On the palate, creamy vanilla combines with peppery warmth and liquid caramel. Hints of smoked almonds with a honeyed sweetness add to the flavours.
• Finish: Drying, wine-like oak notes emerge in the finish. Wood spice, toasted nuts and gentle peat smoke linger, with spicy almond notes remaining persistently present.

Distillery/Bottler:

Micil Distillery is located in Salthill on Galway Bay and opened in 2016 as Galway’s first legal distillery in over a century. Its name honours Micil Mac Chearra, who began making Poitín in Connemara in 1848. The family passed down its knowledge and recipes orally in the Irish language over six generations.

At its own distillery, Micil uses small pot stills and determines the distillation cut points by smell and taste. Its own whiskey production began in 2020. Micil also develops bottlings from purchased whiskeys, which it further matures in selected casks and bottles independently. Long Walk belongs to this range.

The whiskey for Long Walk comes from Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, County Louth. Operating since 2015, the distillery supplies smaller distilleries and independent brands, among others. Using pot stills and column stills, it produces various whiskey styles, including grain whiskey, double- and triple-distilled malt whiskey and peated malt whiskey.
