Special Features:

A long finish in a second-fill Moscatel sherry cask shapes this cask-strength Storehouse Special. Distilled twice in 2016, the Irish single malt first matured in ex-bourbon casks. Maurice O’Connell filled cask 5066 with the malt for the first time in 2021 and bottled a first edition from it after seven months. He then filled the cask again with the same malt distilled in 2016. This second filling matured for another 35 months before the whisky was bottled in 2025 as a single-cask release at 55.7% in 0.7-litre bottles.

O’Connell acquired the Moscatel sherry casks after visiting a Spanish bodega. Cask 5066 brings together toasted nuts, dark fruit and oak spice with orange blossom, citrus, grass and tropical fruit. The whisky is neither coloured nor chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers oak spice, toasted nuts and dark fruit. Orange blossom, honeysuckle and dried orange peel add floral and citrus accents.
• Palate: On the palate, floral notes and citrus mingle with spice. A grassy, earthy background and tropical fruit round out the flavour.
• Finish: The finish is long, with spice and tropical fruit lingering.

Distillery/Bottler:

Wayward Irish Spirits uses The Liberator as its brand and selects Irish distillates for its whiskeys, which it matures further and bottles. Maurice O’Connell works as a whiskey bonder at Lakeview Estate near Killarney in County Kerry; his storehouse stands beside Lough Leane. The Storehouse Specials are small releases, including cask-strength and single-cask bottlings. For this release, he used a Moscatel sherry cask for the single malt a second time.
