This Storehouse Special bottling combines a triple-distilled Irish single malt from 2019 with 20 months of additional maturation in ex-rye casks. Wayward Irish Spirits carried out this maturation phase and bottled the whiskey at Lakeview Estate near Killarney.

In February 2024, Maurice O’Connell transferred the whiskey into 120-litre casks that had previously held rye whiskey from Catoctin Creek Distillery in Virginia. He monitored its development over 20 months; once the desired aromatic balance had been reached, the whiskey was bottled at cask strength in 2025 at 59.2%. It is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Relative to the volume of liquid, a 120-litre cask offers more internal wood surface area than a larger cask of the same shape. On the sensory side, vanilla cream, honey and sweetness contrast with fruit and herbal notes, caramel and pepper, while the long, warm finish carries the spicy character through.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals vanilla cream, honey and an underlying sweetness accompanied by spices.
• Palate: Fruit and herbal notes combine with caramel and pepper on the palate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Maurice and Francesca O’Connell founded Wayward Irish Spirits at Lakeview Estate outside Killarney in County Kerry. Built in 1869, the estate traces its history to James O’Connell, a younger brother of the Irish politician Daniel O’Connell. Daniel’s nickname, “The Liberator”, gave the whiskey brand its name.

As an independent bonder, Wayward Irish Spirits sources mature whiskey and handles further maturation, finishing, marrying and bottling at the family estate. For Malt X Rye, Maurice O’Connell oversaw the 20-month additional maturation in ex-rye casks and the subsequent bottling under The Liberator brand.
