Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 56.6% | Colouring: No
Special Features:
A long finish in a fresh Sauternes cask distinguishes this triple-distilled Irish single malt. The whiskey was distilled in 2017 and transferred to the cask selected for finishing in July 2021. It remained there for around four and a half years. Maurice O’Connell monitored its development through regular cask samples.
In October 2025, O’Connell reduced the alcohol strength from 57.8% to 56.6% to balance the malt character, cask influence and alcohol. The whiskey contains no added colouring and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals dried cherries and figs alongside citrus zest.
- Palate: On the palate, toasted malt and hazelnut combine with wine-like sweetness. Blackberries, dried kiwi and blood orange zest add to the flavours.
- Finish: The finish is warm and spicy, with candied ginger, pepper and citrus notes.
Distillery/Bottler:
Founded in 2017, Wayward Irish Spirits is based on the Lakeview Estate beside Lough Leane near Killarney. Maurice O’Connell works as a whiskey bonder, focusing on maturing, finishing and blending whiskeys from other Irish distilleries. Its warehouse is a stone farmhouse around 300 years old, converted into a bonded warehouse and named House of Contentment. The whiskeys are also bottled on the family estate.
The brand name The Liberator honours Maurice O’Connell’s relative Daniel O’Connell, the Irish politician and advocate of peaceful reform. With its Storehouse Specials, Wayward Irish Spirits makes room for small, limited releases. The range includes cask experiments, single-cask bottlings, cask-strength bottlings and special blends.
