Special Features:

The Pogues Irish Whiskey brings together the Irish folk-punk band and West Cork Distillers. Developed in 2015, this blend contains equal parts malt and grain whiskey and is produced in small batches. Whiskey specialist Frank McHardy was responsible for its development.

The maturation combines sherry and bourbon casks: the blend includes single malt matured in sherry casks and grain whiskey matured in first-fill bourbon casks. Malt and roasted nuts meet dark chocolate, citrus fruit and peppery spice. The whiskey is bottled at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, malt, roasted almonds and dark chocolate combine with spicy notes. Grain, walnut, citrus and pepper are also present, accompanied by a sweet impression. Fruity aromas, oak and barley add to the nose, alongside herbal and floral notes and honey.
• Palate: The palate reveals citrus and dark fruits, accompanied by spice and freshly cracked pepper. A light sweetness complements these impressions. The mouthfeel is rich, with honey and nutmeg adding further accents alongside the citrus fruit. Delicate, very soft impressions combine with toasted notes and flavours of honey, apple and hazelnut.
• Finish: The finish is rounded and long-lasting, with a lingering malty note.

Distillery/Bottler:

West Cork Distillers was founded in 2003 by childhood friends John O’Connell, Ger McCarthy and Denis McCarthy. They produced their first spirits in a room behind Denis’ house in Union Hall, using two small stills they had bought from a Swiss spirits producer. In 2014, the company moved to a new distillery in Skibbereen, in Ireland’s County Cork.

For The Pogues, West Cork uses Irish grain and spring water from the River Ilen catchment area. The distillery malts its own barley and produces the whiskey in small batches using handcrafted copper stills. Malting its own barley allows it to influence the eventual flavour profile from the grain preparation stage.
