A short finish in a cask previously used for peated whiskey gives Wayward Smoky Gin its distinctive character. In the Storehouse at Wayward Irish Spirits, the gin takes on a subtle smoky influence that complements its juniper and citrus notes. The result combines a classic gin profile with a cask treatment drawn from the world of whiskey.

The gin is offered at 39% alcohol in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and contains no added colouring. It can be enjoyed neat, chilled or over ice. When serving it with tonic, use a restrained amount of tonic and add an olive.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, juniper and citrus notes mingle with spice and a light smoky impression.
• Palate: The gin opens softly on the palate. Juniper, citrus and other fruity notes combine with spice and smoke.
• Finish: Peat smoke becomes more pronounced in the powerful, slightly pungent finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Wayward Irish Spirits was founded in 2017 and is based on the Lakeview Estate beside Lough Leane near Killarney in County Kerry. Here, Maurice O’Connell continues his family's long tradition in the wine and spirits trade. The company name recalls Daniel O’Connell, whom British Prime Minister Robert Peel described as wayward because of his independent thinking.

The company's work focuses on whiskey maturation, finishing and blending. As a whiskey bonder, it buys both matured whiskeys and young spirits produced to its own specifications, then develops them further on the estate. Its cask warehouse occupies a stone farmhouse around 300 years old. For The Liberator whiskey range, Wayward Irish Spirits sources port casks directly from Portugal and fills them within three weeks of their being emptied. Smoky Gin applies this experience in cask finishing to another spirit, using a cask previously used for peated whiskey.
