Pti Lakaz brings together tropical cask ageing in the Seychelles and rum from Barbados. In this blend from the St André Series, pot-distilled sugarcane juice rum aged in various casks, including port wine casks, meets molasses rum from the Seychelles aged for three years in ex-bourbon casks. Eight-year-old molasses rum from the Foursquare Distillery in Barbados completes the blend. The bottling thus combines two raw materials and ageing components from two island origins.

After blending, the rum rests in steel tanks and is slowly reduced to bottling strength with spring water from the Seychelles. Coarse filtration removes solid cask residues such as charred wood particles; Takamaka does not use chill filtration. Pti Lakaz is bottled at 45.1%, with no added sugar or colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fruity and spicy aromas come together in a varied bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, red fruits and dried apricots meet bitter cocoa and star anise.
• Finish: The finish is dry and layered, with notes of spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Behind Takamaka is the Trois Frères Distillery, founded by brothers Richard and Bernard d’Offay. The first experiments began in 2000 with Bernard and his father Robert. Their grandfather had already sparked their interest in rum through his homemade Rum Arrangé, a Creole speciality made with macerated fruit, spices and other plant ingredients. After more than a year of experimentation, the family opened the distillery in February 2002. Today, Takamaka is produced on the historic La Plaine St Andre estate on the east coast of Mahé.

Takamaka uses both locally grown sugarcane and imported molasses, as the Seychelles has no sugar industry of its own. In its general molasses rum production, the molasses is diluted with the distillery’s own spring water and fermented for three and a half days before being distilled in a multi-column still. The distillery also has a longstanding collaboration with Richard Seale of Foursquare in Barbados. The eight-year-old rum sourced from Foursquare complements several Takamaka blends, including Pti Lakaz.
