This long-aged Caroni belongs to the closed Trinidad distillery’s heavy HTR style. HTR stands for Heavy Trinidad Rum. The rum comes from a single distillery and was produced in a column still, a continuously operating distillation column. It matured for 23 years in American oak casks.

That Boutique-y Rum Company released Batch 11 exclusively for Kirsch Import. The release comprises 365 bottles, each containing 0.5 litres at 62.3% alcohol. No sugar or colouring was added, and the rum was not chill-filtered.

Its character combines industrial hints of rubber and tar with oak, fruit and coffee notes. This rugged side sits alongside sweeter impressions and a mineral, earthy finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, rubber and tar meet oak, vanilla and burnt sugar. Peach, banana and fruit sweets add to the sweeter, fruity side.
• Palate: Rubber, tar and wood shape the palate. They are joined by vanilla, espresso and apple, alongside spicy mocha and a distinct bitterness.
• Finish: Mocha, coffee, dried fruit and wood remain present in the finish. Mineral and earthy notes complement the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caroni was closely linked to sugar production in Trinidad: the neighbouring sugar factory supplied the distillery with molasses as its raw material. Initially, it operated a small cast-iron pot still; more modern distillation columns later supplemented and replaced this equipment. Tate & Lyle took over the business in 1937, before it was nationalised in 1975. The decline of the local sugar industry eventually led to its closure. Since then, the remaining rum stocks have been released by independent bottlers, among others.

That Boutique-y Rum Company is an independent bottling label from Atom Brands, launched in 2018. It was modelled on the already established That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Its recognisable visual identity includes illustrated comic-style labels, often featuring humorous references to the world of spirits. Caroni distilled the rum; That Boutique-y Rum Company released it as an independent bottling.
