Chairman's Reserve Legacy honours Laurie Barnard and his work on the diversity of rums at St. Lucia Distillers. Introduced in 2020, this release combines molasses distillates with rum made from sugarcane juice. The blend includes distillates from the Coffey column and the John Dore and Vendome pot stills. Legacy thus brings together different raw materials and distillation methods in one bottling.

The rums in the blend mature for between five and seven and a half years in former bourbon casks. Legacy carries no age statement and is bottled at 43% in a 0.7-litre bottle. Gift packaging is included.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pineapple and banana mingle with vanilla. There are also notes of sweet butterscotch, raisins and tobacco, alongside light grassy nuances.
• Palate: The palate reveals intense notes of grilled tropical fruit and spices. Crème brûlée, sultanas, ginger and vanilla round out the flavours.
• Finish: The grilled tropical fruit notes and spice persist through the long finish, which feels soft.

Distillery/Bottler:

St. Lucia Distillers is located in the Roseau Valley on St. Lucia. The company was formed in 1972 through the merger of the Barnard family's distillery in Dennery and the Geest distillery in Roseau. Its roots lie in rum production on the island's sugar plantations, where molasses, a by-product of sugar production, was fermented and distilled.

Laurie Barnard developed Chairman's Reserve with the aim of bringing different rum styles together through blending. He experimented with distillates from John Dore pot stills and the Coffey column, then allowed the blended rums to mature further. His work also included growing sugarcane around the distillery, which led to the development of a yeast culture of its own. Legacy draws on this background through its sugarcane juice component.
