Madeira cask maturation brings together tropical and continental ageing in this rum: after fourteen years in the Dominican Republic, it continued to mature in continental conditions. Madeira casks were used throughout its maturation.

The rum was distilled from pure sugar cane juice in a column still in 2008 and bottled in 2025 after 17 years. Single cask DR08MD01 yielded 225 bottles for the Flag Series within the Collection Itinéraires. Bottled at a cask strength of 60.8%, it contains no colouring and is non-chill-filtered. It comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines firmness with a softer side. Roasted peanuts, toffee, orange peel and dried apricots shape the aroma. With air, pepper, mango, guava and balsamic pine notes emerge.
• Palate: The rum is lively and taut on the palate. Orange peel enlivens the opening, while the mature rancio character of the nose returns. The texture then becomes creamier, with cane sugar, chocolate cream and guava unfolding.
• Finish: The finish is delicate and crisp, with raspberries, wild strawberries, heather honey, saffron and gentian. The subsequent retronasal impression reveals geranium blossoms, sandalwood and salted butter caramel.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Flag Series is a collaboration between La Maison du Whisky and Velier. Their joint venture, La Maison & Velier, was founded in 2017 and develops exclusive spirit bottlings. La Maison du Whisky has specialised in whisky and other spirits since 1956 and shares its expertise through initiatives including Whisky Live Paris and Whisky Magazine, published since 2004.

Launched in 2021, the Flag Series explores individual rum origins through selected casks and different approaches to maturation. The rums are bottled at natural cask strength, with each small release comprising only a few hundred bottles. The focus is on the distinctive qualities of each origin and the selected cask.
