Maturation in former raisin wine casks shapes El Ron Prohibido Gran Reserva 15. The sugar cane distillate matures in a solera system comprising 15 American oak casks. The casks are traditionally toasted, a treatment that contributes to the rum's dry notes. Different matured rums are blended together for bottling.

Alongside its combination of dried fruit and sweet roasted notes, the rum also reveals molasses, sugar cane juice and anise, as well as smoky and toasted nuances. Its colour is dark brown with reddish highlights. This 40% bottling is available here in a small bottle containing 0.1 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sweet wood notes mingle with raisins and plums. Caramel and vanilla meet chocolate, coffee and honey. Nutty impressions of almonds and walnuts add to the bouquet, with further accents of sugar cane, mint, pepper and cinnamon.
• Palate: On the palate, the rum reveals creamy toffee and dried fruit, including raisins and prunes. Spicy oak and a subtle tobacco note complement the flavour, alongside hints of chocolate and coffee.
• Finish: The long finish feels silky, with lingering dried fruit. Vanilla, chocolate and coffee are accompanied by a little caramel and light spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

El Ron Prohibido has ties to the former Hacienda Corralejo in Pénjamo, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Ron Prohibido S.A. de C.V. is the company behind the brand. Today's rum production combines solera maturation with casks that previously held sweet wines or raisin wine.

The brand name means “the forbidden rum” and draws on the history of Chinguirito, a Mexican sugar cane drink. The brand's historical narrative includes Spanish trading ships bringing raisin wine to New Spain around 1700. For the return journey, the emptied casks, still imbued with the wine, were filled with the Mexican sugar cane drink. This connection between sugar cane distillate and wine casks forms part of the background to today's brand.
