Special Features:

Flying King brings together two distinct Caribbean rum styles: ester-rich Jamaican spirits meet softer, rounder rums from the Dominican Republic. The blend includes rums distilled in both pot stills and continuous column stills. It spent its entire three-year maturation in a tropical climate, in former bourbon casks made from American oak.

The rums were distilled in 2015, and Flying King was bottled as a small batch in 2019 at 42% alcohol. It is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring. Alongside its pronounced fruitiness, it offers baked banana, dried fruit and subtle notes of liquorice and cinnamon.

The name and the sailing ship on the label recall Robert Sample's Flying King of 1719. This bottling belongs to the Transcaribbean Rum Line, whose blends were developed for cocktails. Flying King takes a classic, mature rum character as its starting point. Vanilla, banana and cocoa add to its aromatic range, and it can also be enjoyed neat.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose is penetrating and slightly sharp, with pronounced estery notes, pineapple and chocolate. The chocolate develops into chocolate-coated malt confectionery, shifts towards salted caramel and finally gives way to banana and bread.
  • Palate: On the palate, the rum is surprisingly soft, including in its texture. Kiwi and langsat fruit sit alongside subtle cherry notes. Chocolate wafers, earthy accents and a savoury note of oyster sauce complement the fruit.
  • Finish: Distinct estery impressions linger on the finish, together with notes of overripe banana skins and apple peel.

Distillery/Bottler:

La Maison du Whisky is the bottler behind Flying King. The Transcaribbean Rum Line complements the Transcontinental Rum Line with its own blends of rums from different countries. Unlike selecting casks of the same age and origin, creating such a blend requires repeated tastings and trials until the individual rum styles work together.

When selecting rums, the team led by brand manager Johann Jobello tastes the samples blind. Colleagues with experience in whisky or cognac also contribute their assessments. The selection principles include choosing rums without added sugar or artificial colouring. Flying King was created under Jobello's predecessor, Arthur.
