Special Features:

This HGML release from the third Magnum Series matured for seven years in a tropical climate. The molasses-based rum was distilled in pot stills in 2018 and bottled in 2025 at 60%. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in gift packaging.

HGML stands for Hampden George MacFarquhar Lawson. This release has an ester content of 1,000 to 1,100 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol. Its character brings together intense fruit, honey and flowers, with roasted and tarry impressions becoming increasingly prominent.

The collaboration with Magnum Photos also gives the series a distinctive photographic identity. The photographs for this third edition were taken by Cristina de Middel on the Hampden estate. Despite the series name, this bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, partially dried grapes and roasted pineapple mingle with acacia honey and vanilla. With a little time, cocoa, resin and medicinal, balsamic notes of benzoin emerge. Exposure to air brings out intense herbal aromas of savory and rosemary.
  • Palate: The rum feels full and creamy on the palate, with intense notes of apple, pear, banana and pineapple. Later, resinous sugar cane notes and ginger lead into floral impressions of lily and dandelion, as well as turmeric and ylang-ylang.
  • Finish: The long, concentrated finish combines freshly cut sugar cane with tobacco, straw and tuberose. Tar, charcoal, Bourbon vanilla and star anise remain present when exhaling through the nose. The empty glass reveals artichoke heart and essential oils.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hampden Estate has produced rum in Jamaica's Trelawny since 1753. Long fermentations and pot still distillation are defining features of the distillery's methods. Fermentation with natural yeasts lasts eight to fifteen days. Hampden's different marks identify distinct distillate styles, each with its own aromatic character.

Velier is the bottler of this edition. Together with La Maison du Whisky, the company brings rum and photography together in the Magnum Series. Launched in 2021, the project collaborates with Magnum Photos and presents selected distilleries alongside the work of the participating photographers.
