Havana Club Gran Reserva 15 brings together extended tropical maturation and the Cuban art of blending. Selected reserve rums and aguardientes, or sugarcane distillates, are blended for this rum from the Icónica collection and then returned to oak casks for further maturation. Even the youngest rum in the blend matures for at least 15 years in white oak casks.

In Cuba’s warm, humid climate, a substantial proportion of the cask contents evaporates during maturation: the so-called angels’ share. These maturation conditions also shape the characteristic dry note of Gran Reserva 15. The mahogany-coloured rum combines dried fruit and wood notes with chocolate, coffee and spices. It is offered at 40% in a 0.7-litre bottle and comes without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Dried fruit leads on the nose, particularly prunes and raisins. Oak notes add to the aromas.
• Palate: The rum is lively and full-bodied on the palate. Sweet fruit notes combine with chocolate, coffee, tobacco and spices to create a balanced flavour.
• Finish: The long finish fades with vanilla and cocoa.

Distillery/Bottler:

Havana Club makes its rum in Cuba from molasses sourced from various regions of the island. Its distilleries are located in Santa Cruz del Norte, east of Havana, and in San José; they were built in 1970 and 2007 respectively. After fermentation, the molasses is distilled in continuous systems with two distillation columns.

The Maestros del Ron Cubano oversee the development of the rums from cask selection through maturation and blending. Among them is Maestro Asbel Morales, who heads the San José distillery. Havana Club generally uses white oak casks that previously held whisky in Ireland or Scotland. Its approach combines repeated blending with further periods of maturation to develop the desired profile of each bottling. The knowledge of the Maestros del Ron Cubano has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
