For this Rare Proof Edition, selected rums from the 2009 vintage were blended into a limited small batch after thirteen years of maturation. Marco Savio developed the range together with specialists. The bottling strength was chosen through several rounds of tasting, with 50.5% selected for this release. Rare Proof therefore denotes a deliberately chosen strength, not necessarily cask strength.

Its powerful, lively character brings together caramelised pineapple and mango, leather and spicy wood notes. A few drops of water offer another way to explore the rum. It is not chill-filtered; the bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals intense fruit and spice notes, including pineapple and mango.
• Palate: On the palate, caramel and candied pineapple meet leather, pecan and oak.
• Finish: The long, warming finish lingers with coriander, allspice, pecan and wood notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Marco Savio's journey into rum began in the coffee trade. After joining his father's company in 1990, he travelled to coffee plantations in Central America, where he met a rum master blender. Ten years of learning and experimentation with rum masters in Cuba, Guatemala and Panama followed. In 2000, Savio founded the Rum Malecon brand and worked with master distillers who put his recipes into practice.

Malecon is made in Panama from sugarcane molasses following Cuban tradition. Its general production methods include slow fermentation in open vats with naturally occurring yeasts and maturation in former bourbon casks. Before the spirit is put into casks, its strength is reduced to 75%. Panama's warm warehouse climate encourages interaction between the rum and the cask wood.
