Maturation in a former Woodford Reserve bourbon cask shapes this single-cask release from the Collection Itinéraires. The rum spent 50 months, or four years and two months, in cask WRD2. The limited edition comprises 282 numbered bottles. Its name, Satara, refers to a rest camp in Kruger National Park.

Satara is pot-distilled from pure sugarcane juice and bottled without dilution at a cask strength of 64.6%. Its ester concentration is 467.7 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol. The rum is neither coloured nor chill-filtered, and the 0.7-litre bottle comes in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The bold nose evokes kerosene and Tiger Balm. Cloves and black pepper meet cane sugar, sugarcane syrup and candied pineapple. Walnuts and almonds contribute a milky note. With aeration, rubber aromas become more prominent.
• Palate: On the palate, the rum is lively, taut and full-bodied. Pungency and a medicinal note reminiscent of a mustard poultice combine with liquorice and succulent sugarcane juice. A warm cane sugar note gradually spreads across the palate, followed by fibrous sugarcane and vanilla.
• Finish: The silky, gentle finish combines chocolate with pronounced sugarcane. Candied lemon and orange gradually provide a lively contrast. On the exhale and in the empty glass, light camphor notes appear alongside balsamic hints of thuja and cypress, as well as medicinal, vegetal and intense geranium notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Robert Greaves founded Mhoba in 2013. The distillery is located near Malalane in South Africa, on a 400-hectare estate. Local Nkomazi sugarcane is grown organically and harvested by hand there. Mhoba turns its fresh juice into rum. Processing its own raw material and using pot stills built in-house are central to its approach.

Mhoba's long fermentations can last up to three weeks. Satara is produced and bottled by Mhoba and belongs to the Collection Itinéraires.
