Special Features:

Mhoba White 2025 centres on the selection of distillation fractions rather than cask maturation. Following double distillation, small fractions are collected separately, assessed and then blended to create this unaged rum. It is the first white Mhoba bottling in the Habitation Velier range and is offered at 66.2% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres.

The rum is made from pure sugarcane juice fermented for seven to ten days. The selected distillates contain 839.7 grams of congeners per hectolitre of pure alcohol, including 614.6 grams of esters. These compounds contribute to the rum’s aromatic profile, and the bottling displays a distinctly fermentation-driven character. It contains no colouring and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, a strong fermentation character combines with black olives and a varnish-like impression. Fresh sugarcane and delicate floral nuances complement the intense yet balanced aromatic profile.
• Palate: The rum is concentrated and very intense on the palate, with a full-bodied texture. Muscovado sugar and ripe banana define the flavour, which unfolds quickly and remains present for a long time. A subtle note of white pepper adds another nuance.
• Finish: The long finish combines light smoky notes with a hint of citrus peel that lends freshness to the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mhoba Distillery is situated near Malalane in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, between the Makhonjwa Mountains and Kruger National Park. Robert Greaves’s family has grown sugarcane there since the 1980s. Greaves initially wanted to process molasses from his own cane. However, the local sugar mill processes raw materials from different farms together and could not supply separate molasses, so he chose freshly pressed juice from his own sugarcane instead.

A mechanical engineer, Greaves designed and built much of the distillery’s equipment himself, including the sugarcane presses and pot stills. This allows him to modify the equipment as needed: the stills’ reflux columns were shortened, for example, after it became clear that longer copper contact removed too much flavour. This in-house engineering is part of Mhoba’s approach and allows direct adjustments to production.

Velier is responsible for the bottling within the Habitation Velier range. The project is developed in collaboration with the respective rum producers and focuses on pure pot-still distillates. It brings out the differences between stills, regional styles and production methods rather than concealing them behind a uniform brand profile.
