Special Features:

Maturation in Barbados and France shapes this rum from the Signature Blends range. It first spends three years in bourbon casks in its native tropical climate. After the crossing, it matures for another two years in south-western France in former Ferrand Cognac casks. This second maturation adds roundness and structure.

Molasses forms the base and ferments for three to four days. The blend brings together spirits distilled in a double-column still and the Old Gregg’s pot still. Tropical fruit, vanilla and caramel complement its roasted, pastry-like character. The bottling contains a dosage of 16 grams of sugar per litre and is offered at 40% alcohol.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pastry notes mingle with a little pipe tobacco and toasted marshmallows. Bacon fat, dark raisins and prunes then emerge.
• Palate: The palate opens with bittersweet, roasted flavours. Toasty notes then appear, with hints of baked orchard fruit and resin.
• Finish: The medium-length finish leaves a chocolatey impression.

Distillery/Bottler:

Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados was founded in 1893 by George Stade. He developed the island’s first column still, which allowed lighter rums to be distilled continuously. Different types of still remain part of the distillery’s production methods today. The team also cultivates special yeast strains in its own yeast culture facility, including strains from the local environment.

Founder and Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel is the driving force behind Planteray. The brand’s double maturation draws on the historical practice of shipping rum to Europe for further ageing. For the second maturation, it uses former Ferrand casks in the cooler, more changeable climate of south-western France. Gabriel decides when the matured rums are ready for bottling; the raffia wrapping is a distinctive feature of the bottles.
