With Renegade White 2025, Habitation Velier introduces its first unaged rum from this Grenadian distillery. It is made from the fresh juice of Cain sugarcane grown at Old Bacolet on the island’s southern coast. This windswept farm lies on a floodplain between two small rivers. Sediment-rich soils and a high water table favour sugarcane growth.

Before distillation, the sugarcane juice ferments for 195 hours, or just over eight days, at a controlled temperature. It is then distilled in Forsyths pot stills. As a Pure Single Rum, this bottling comes from one distillery and is produced exclusively by pot still distillation. Without cask ageing, the aromas of the raw material and distillation take centre stage.

This limited edition was bottled in 2025 at 55%. Its congener content is 328.1 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol; these accompanying substances include compounds that contribute to aroma. The rum contains neither added sugar nor colouring and is not chill-filtered. The bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is expressive, with fresh vegetal notes. Juicy sugarcane, green mango and dry hay define the aromas. With air, slightly tart and floral nuances emerge.
• Palate: The palate is taut and herbaceous. Green apple peel combines with a trace of tarragon and white pepper. The mouthfeel is lively and balanced.
• Finish: The long finish is salty, with mineral notes. Nuances of fresh cardamom and grated makrut lime accompany it, leaving lasting freshness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Renegade was established on Grenada in 2020 by Mark Reynier and his partners. The project explores how sugarcane variety and growing location influence rum: harvests from individual plots are processed separately, so their particular soil and climate conditions are not lost in a shared blend of raw materials. To this end, the distillery works with different sugarcane varieties and both a pot still and a Coffey distillation system. Production ceased in 2024.

Habitation Velier is a bottling range established in 2015, developed by Velier in collaboration with rum producers. It focuses on rums from a single distillery that are distilled entirely in pot stills. The range includes both unaged and aged bottlings and highlights differences in production: labels provide details such as still type and congener content. For this Renegade, the distillery supplies the rum, while Velier is responsible for the bottling range.
