The Peated Islay Cask Finish brings together this Panama rum’s sweet, fruity character and the smoky influence of a cask previously used for peated Islay whisky. This ten-year-old El Ron del Artesano comes from cask 314-22. Citrus notes, chocolate and nougat complement the smoke, while wood and spice add further definition to its flavour.

The rum is bottled without added sugar or flavourings. El Ron del Artesano also forgoes chill filtration and colouring. The small bottle contains 0.2 litres at 44.7% alcohol and is offered without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, delicate smoke accompanies citrus notes of lemon, orange and lime. Hints of nougat and chocolate appear alongside forest honey and a subtle salty impression of sea salt.
• Palate: On the palate, clear smoke notes combine with spicy wood and the bitter spiciness of orange and lime peel. The citrus notes also have a sweet, fruity quality. Delicate honey sweetness and accents of dark chocolate complement the dense body. The rum has an oily texture, with bitter liquorice notes and hints of honeycomb.
• Finish: Dry wood and a hint of sea salt linger in the long finish. A delicate mineral note accompanies dark chocolate and smoky, salty undertones. Smoke and chocolate linger together at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

El Ron del Artesano combines the selection of Panamanian rums with a family history rooted in the Black Forest. That history began in 1880 with a distillery and cooperage producing spirits and building and repairing casks. Viktor, whose portrait now appears on the labels, learned both trades. The rum brand emerged in the family’s fifth generation. Sebastian began selecting casks in Panama in 2012 and oversees maturation and the selection of rums for bottling.

In the family’s warehouse, tasting determines when a rum is ready to be bottled. A three-metre-thick covering of concrete and earth keeps the temperature largely stable throughout the year, while humidity is also regulated naturally. This allows the selected rums to mature under consistent conditions. Bottling and labelling are carried out by hand.
