The ruby port finish brings together a long maturation in bourbon casks and the influence of Portuguese port casks in this Panamanian rum. El Ron del Artesano Ruby Port Cask Finish is part of the brand’s core range. The rum spends its first seven years in former bourbon barrels before continuing its maturation in ruby port casks from Portugal. The eight-year age statement refers to the full maturation period, not an average age from a solera system.

The port casks are carefully emptied before being filled with rum. No sugar is added, and the sugar content remains below 5 grams per litre. Added flavourings, artificial colouring and filtration are also excluded from El Ron del Artesano’s production practices. This bottling from batch 06-24 contains 0.2 litres of rum at 43.4% and is offered without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The rum initially reveals aromas of cherries and dried plums. With a little air, delicate vanilla and dried orange peel emerge. Milk chocolate and orange complement the fruity aroma, accompanied by a slightly sweet scent of vanilla and dried plums. After some time in the glass, caramel and blood orange also emerge.
• Palate: The opening is gentle, soft and silky. Cherries and vanilla remain present as cream toffee and cherry cake notes join them. The red fruit suggests cherry at the front of the tongue and becomes darker towards the finish, with hints of plum. The chocolate note also develops towards dark chocolate and cocoa. The rum remains soft and rounded, while the alcohol stays in the background.
• Finish: The alcohol briefly makes itself felt on the finish, but remains well integrated and leaves a gentle sensation on the tongue. A dark cocoa note accompanies the balanced, full-bodied finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

El Ron del Artesano’s family history began in 1880 with a small distillery and cooperage in the Black Forest. Viktor, born in 1887, learned both distilling and cask-making. The brand is dedicated to him, and its label depicts him working on a cask.

The fifth generation launched the rum project with the aim of shaping the character of Panamanian rums through maturation and cask selection rather than added sugar or flavourings. Sebastian began selecting casks in Panama in 2012 and oversees the maturation and selection processes. The rums mature in selected casks in the family warehouse, with tastings determining when they are ready to be bottled. Bottling and labelling are carried out by hand.
