Savanna Traditionnel combines five years of cask maturation with the fruity, spicy character of a molasses rum from La Réunion. Following column distillation, the rum matures in a tropical climate. Rums from around ten French oak casks from Limousin and Allier are blended for this bottling. Their previous use for Cognac adds another dimension to the cask influence.

Alongside its woody notes, the rum reveals mango, pineapple and vanilla, followed by almond notes. This exotic character sits alongside herbal and balsamic impressions. Savanna uses no added sugar or colouring. The rum is bottled at 43% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The bouquet is soft yet expansive. Dried banana and sugarcane syrup mingle with camphor, geranium and vetiver. Menthol and peppermint bring cooling accents, while Bourbon vanilla and tobacco leaf round out the aromas.
• Palate: The rum is lively, full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Cinnamon, clove and nutmeg meet vanilla, pineapple and mango. Liquorice tastes almost salty, while praline, almond, milk chocolate and coconut milk complement the sweet, nutty character.
• Finish: The long, concentrated finish recalls balsam, camphor and frankincense. Turmeric and clove add spice before vanilla, fruity and floral notes unfold.

Distillery/Bottler:

Savanna has close ties to the sugar industry of La Réunion. A distillery was already operating in 1870 on the sugar estate of the same name near Saint-Paul. Under Emile Hugot, the operation was modernised from the 1950s onwards. Since its relocation in 1992, the distillery has stood beside the Bois-Rouge sugar factory in Saint-André. In 2003, Savanna began marketing rum under its own brand, having previously supplied mainly other bottlers.

The distillery cultivates its own yeasts and studies their use in fermentation. Stainless steel and copper columns, including a Savalle column, together with additional pot stills, allow it to produce different rum styles: from molasses rum and rum made from fresh sugarcane juice to intensely aromatic Grand-Arôme bottlings. For maturation, Savanna uses casks including former Cognac casks made from French oak; selected other bottlings receive additional finishes in wine or spirit casks.
