Origine 1870 brings together two styles of Savanna's molasses rum in a long-aged blend: traditional rums and Grand Arôme rums. Master Blender Thierry Grondin developed the bottling with the cellar master as a tribute to the distillery's establishment on the Domaine de Savanna in 1870. They selected six rums from particularly rare and old stocks.

The individual rums matured in tropical conditions for ten to sixteen years. Their French oak casks had previously held Cognac or port wine. The bottling therefore combines different rum styles, maturation periods and previous cask contents rather than expressing the character of a single cask.

The release comprises 1,200 decanters. The rum is offered at 50% alcohol in a 0.7-litre decanter and comes in a premium box. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fruity and balsamic impressions meet molasses and liquorice. Mint and menthol-like freshness complement the bouquet, while a light waxy note remains in the background.
• Palate: The rum is full-bodied, harmonious and balanced on the palate. The impressions from the nose continue, with liquorice playing a particularly prominent role in the flavour.
• Finish: The long finish combines fruity accents with spicy tobacco and leather notes. The influence of the port wine casks and the distillates produced in the Savalle column also remains perceptible.

Distillery/Bottler:

Savanna's history is closely linked to La Réunion's sugar industry. The distillery commemorated by Origine 1870 was established in 1870 on the estate of the same name near Saint-Paul. After the estate was acquired by the business group centred on Emile Hugot in 1948, the present-day distillery underwent modernisation from the 1950s onwards. In 1992, it moved to Saint-André on the east coast, directly beside the Bois-Rouge sugar factory.

The distillery cultivates its own yeasts and researches different fermentation methods. Its equipment includes stainless steel and copper distillation columns, as well as a copper Savalle column. These enable Savanna to produce traditional molasses rums alongside particularly aromatic Grand Arôme rums; its production range also includes rums made from fresh sugarcane juice and light rums. This breadth provides the background to the combination of different molasses rums in Origine 1870.

For many years, Savanna supplied most of its production to other bottlers. Its first releases under its own brand in 2003 brought its aged rums and its own cask selection into greater focus. Alongside former Cognac casks, the distillery also uses casks that previously held various wines and spirits to finish selected rums.
