This first edition of the Journey Label Collection combines its Trinidad origins with maturation in both tropical and continental conditions. Trinidad Distillers Limited distilled this molasses rum in 2017; it then matured for around 6 years in a single ex-bourbon cask. It spent 2 of those years in a tropical climate.

Hidden Spirits commissioned the bottling of the rum from this cask, yielding 402 bottles at 45% alcohol. The rum is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. Herbs and spices provide a fresh counterpoint to its fruity, honeyed character. The dark bottle featuring a truck motif comes in orange-red gift packaging; each bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla and honey mingle with pineapple, which also evokes grilled fruit. Candied lemon and pastry add to the bouquet. Cinnamon and sweet spices accompany delicate hints of butter.
• Palate: The rum feels fresh on the palate. Pineapple, honey and vanilla meet molasses and grassy, floral impressions of a meadow in bloom. Mint and fresh herbs add to the flavour.
• Finish: The medium-length finish is soft and supple. Cinnamon and vanilla cream linger alongside menthol and light herbal notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Trinidad Distillers Limited, or TDL, belongs to the Angostura group in Trinidad and Tobago. Molasses forms the basis of rum production there. Angostura uses a yeast strain whose origins date back to the 1940s. Fermentation usually lasts 24 to 36 hours and can be extended to as long as 72 hours. Continuous distillation in columns then produces a range of light and heavy distillates.

Hidden Spirits was founded in 2013 by Andrea Ferrari. The Italian independent bottler selects casks of Scottish single malt and rum for limited releases. Its Journey Label Collection explores different rum origins and their characteristic profiles. For this Trinidad rum, the focus is on selecting a single cask and combining tropical with continental maturation.
