This bottling brings together the historic Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still and prolonged maturation in a former malt whisky cask. The rum was distilled at the now-closed Uitvlugt distillery in Guyana and matured for 29 years in a cask that had previously held malt whisky. Both the distinctive still and the unusual previous contents of the maturation cask are central to this edition.

That Boutique-y Rum Company released the rum in 2023 as Batch 2. The release comprises 396 bottles, each containing 0.5 litres at 44% alcohol. The rum has no added colouring and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, wood shavings mingle with sultanas and blueberries. A creamy yoghurt note accompanies caraway and a subtle hint of smoke.
• Palate: The rum is smooth on the palate. Caramel and vanilla custard combine with malt loaf, rye bread and Brazil nuts coated in milk chocolate.
• Finish: The finish lingers with pronounced oak notes and smoke from toasted wood. Grassy impressions, herbal tea and roasted nuts follow in the aftertaste. Green tea, hazelnut and toast are also discernible.

Distillery/Bottler:

Uitvlugt was one of the historic rum-producing sites on the west coast of Demerara in Guyana. It operated several types of still: alongside a French Savalle column still stood the Double Wooden Pot Still transferred from Port Mourant. The latter produced the spirit for this bottling. Its wooden distillation vessels are made from Greenheart wood and have copper necks. This construction contributes to the still’s distinctly aromatic style of rum. In 2000, it was moved from Uitvlugt to the Diamond distillery, where Demerara Distillers Limited continues to operate it.

That Boutique-y Rum Company is the independent bottler behind this edition. Atom Brands founded the brand in 2018 and developed the concept with rum expert Peter Holland. Its selection focuses on rare casks, different production methods and stocks from distilleries, some of which closed long ago. Its approach includes offering rum without added sugar or flavourings. The bespoke labels by Jim’ll Paint It draw on stories about the rums and their distilleries.
