Nassau Dutch Spiced combines Zuidam's own Flying Dutchman Rum with a spice recipe that draws on the Dutch tradition of spice trading. It uses vanilla from Madagascar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom and ginger. Fresh oranges and lemons are also distilled to add a fruity element to the rum and spice flavours.

The dark, opaque bottle carries a colourful label featuring a sailing ship, echoing the maritime theme. Nassau Dutch Spiced is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle. It can be enjoyed neat or over ice, or used as a spicy base for long drinks with ginger beer or for punch.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Vanilla and cinnamon lead on the nose. Nutmeg and a subtle hint of white pepper complement them, alongside spicy notes of cardamom and ginger.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet vanilla and dry spice notes meet nuances of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is smooth and full-bodied, with a delicate white-pepper piquancy. Subtle orange and lemon notes appear in the background.
• Finish: Spice notes and a subtle oak note linger in the long finish. A gentle, persistent sweetness accompanies the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fred van Zuidam founded the distillery in Baarle-Nassau in 1975. The business began on a site covering 300 square metres; his wife Helene later developed the packaging, which contributed to the company's growth. Patrick and Gilbert van Zuidam represent the next generation to take over the running of the family business.

Zuidam produces its distillates and extracts in-house and processes them further within the company. Alongside rum, its range includes genever, gin, liqueurs and whisky. The distillery uses natural raw materials and avoids artificial fragrances, colours and flavourings. This combination of in-house distillation and experience with spice extracts provides the foundation for Nassau Dutch Spiced.
