Special Features:

This Bunnahabhain matured for 32 years in a single Refill American Hogshead, number 5701. Distilled in 1989, it was bottled on 10 January 2022 by Gordon & MacPhail for the Connoisseurs Choice range. Refill means that the cask had already been used to mature whisky.

This single-cask release comprises 162 bottles at a natural cask strength of 44.6%. The whisky is not smoky and combines tropical fruit and malt with fresh orchard fruit and citrus notes; spice and salt emerge in the finish. It was bottled without added colouring or chill filtration. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and is presented in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Sweet pineapple and coconut appear first on the nose. Dried apricots and toasted malt follow.
  • Palate: Crisp green apples and nectarines combine with fresh citrus notes on the palate.
  • Finish: The whisky becomes distinctly spicier in the finish and leaves a salty note on the palate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by William Robertson together with brothers William and James Greenlees. Roads and homes for employees and their families were built alongside the remote distillery; production began in 1883. The distillery stands on the Sound of Islay. Its particularly tall stills favour a lighter, delicate spirit, as heavier aroma compounds are less able to reach the top. The house style is predominantly unpeated, although Bunnahabhain also produces smaller quantities of peated spirit.

Gordon & MacPhail is the independent bottler of this whisky. With Connoisseurs Choice, George Urquhart created a platform in the 1960s for individual Scottish distilleries whose whiskies were then often used primarily in blends. For the range, Gordon & MacPhail selects spirits, has them matured and bottles them to bring out each distillery's character. This Bunnahabhain matured in Hogshead no. 5701 and was bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in 2022.
