Special Features:

This single-cask Bunnahabhain matured for 34 years in a Refill American Hogshead. Distilled in 1989, the whisky was bottled by Gordon & MacPhail on 3 January 2024 for the Connoisseurs Choice series. Cask 5891 yielded 165 bottles for batch 24/009 at a natural cask strength of 47.3%.

This non-smoky single malt combines citrus and tropical fruit notes with grassy and nutty impressions. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in a wooden box containing one 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines pronounced orange oil, freshly cut grass and green apple. Salted lemons develop alongside grapefruit and mature oak notes.
• Palate: Pineapple and citrus fruit meet coconut on the palate. Roasted peanuts and sweet white chocolate give way to a delicate herbal note.
• Finish: The full, long finish lingers with spice notes and lemon peel.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bunnahabhain stands on the Sound of Islay in the north of the island. Its pear-shaped stills are the tallest on Islay. Their long swan necks make it harder for heavy aromatic compounds to rise, encouraging a lighter, more delicate spirit. The distillery is known for its unpeated house style, but also produces peated spirit.

Gordon & MacPhail released the whisky from cask 5891 as an independent bottler. Founded as a grocery business in 1895, the company developed its work selecting and ageing Scottish malts over long periods under John and George Urquhart. George Urquhart launched the Connoisseurs Choice series in 1968. Gordon & MacPhail sources casks through partners including Speyside Cooperage, which procures former bourbon casks from North America; the wood is selected to suit each distillery's character.
