Elsburn The Journey 2023 matured in casks previously used for sherry, port, Madeira, Marsala, Malaga or Grand Cru Bordeaux wine. These six cask types give the annual edition its fruity, spicy character. The 0.05-litre miniature contains single malt bottled at 43% without chill filtration or added colouring.

Fruitcake and raisins meet oak, vanilla and dark caramel. Bitter orange and mandarin add to the fruit notes, while mocha and a subtle hint of smoke provide further accents.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fruity, spicy and oaky notes appear first on the nose. Malt, coffee, dark caramel and a little toffee follow. Slightly oily raisins, a hint of biscuit dough and vanilla add to the aroma, alongside nutty and toasted notes.
• Palate: The whisky opens mild and balanced on the palate with raisins, fruitcake, oak and a little bitter orange. Vanilla, toffee and dark caramel then build gradually; mandarin, soft mocha and a light, sweetish note of smoke round out the flavour.
• Finish: The long-lasting finish leaves delicate smoke, oak, orange peel and coffee.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hercynian Distilling Co. grew out of Hammerschmiede in the southern Harz region, founded by Karl Theodor Buchholz in 1985. The family business has also produced whisky since 2002. Anna Katariina Buchholz has been with the company since whisky production began and now leads its operations and distillation.

For Elsburn, the distillery uses a small pot-still installation and selects casks of different sizes, including many previously used for fortified and sweet wines. The Journey is produced and bottled by Hercynian Distilling itself.
