The Fercullen Trilogy Set brings together a blend, a Single Grain and a Single Malt. It contains Fercullen Falls at 43%, Fercullen 15 Year Old at 41.5% and Fercullen Single Malt at 46%, each in a miniature containing 0.05 litres. The set contains a total of 0.15 litres of whiskey.

Fercullen Falls consists of equal parts malt and grain whiskey. The malt matures in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, while ex-bourbon casks and new, heavily charred oak casks are used for the grain. Falls was the brand’s first release to include its own whiskey from the Powerscourt Distillery.

The 15-year-old Single Grain is distilled from a mash of maize and malt and initially matures for 15 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. A portion then receives a finish in second-fill Madeira casks. The Single Malt is produced entirely at the Powerscourt Distillery from malted barley and matures in bourbon barrels. It was the brand’s first Single Malt release distilled entirely there.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fercullen Falls has aromas of fresh garden fruit and cinnamon, joined by herbs, brown sugar, toffee and pronounced malt. Fercullen 15 Year Old brings together vanilla and fudge with honeyed almonds, dried apricots and mango. Fercullen Single Malt combines toffee and vanilla with apple and pear. Baking spices, including cinnamon and nutmeg, complement soft leather and buttery, freshly baked pastries.
• Palate: Fercullen Falls is full-bodied, smooth and sweet on the palate. Vanilla icing and malty spice give way to peppery clove notes. Fercullen 15 Year Old evokes warm buttered popcorn and orange and lime marmalade. Dry oak spice complements the sweet and fruity impressions. Fercullen Single Malt combines creamy vanilla pudding and salted caramel with soft oak. Cereal biscuits and tarte Tatin add to the flavour.
• Finish: Fercullen Falls has a lingering finish of warming malty spice, with a drying sensation along the edges of the tongue. Fercullen 15 Year Old leaves creamy vanilla fudge and candied orange and lime peel. Fercullen Single Malt leaves warming oak spice, soft leather, honeyed almonds and stewed fruit.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Powerscourt Distillery is situated on the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. Its distilling equipment, designed and built by Forsyths, includes three copper pot stills. Malt and pot still whiskey are produced here; the distillery uses both double and triple distillation, along with local barley and spring water from the estate.

Under the Fercullen brand, Powerscourt combines its own distillates with older whiskey stocks. Founding Master Distiller and Blender Noel Sweeney selected these stocks so that the brand could offer whiskey while its own production was still maturing. The Trilogy Set illustrates this development through different styles of whiskey.
