Finlaggan Port Finish brings together the powerful peat character of an Islay single malt and a finishing period in port casks. Port Pipes are used for this final maturation. Introduced in 2016, this small-batch bottling combines smoky, savoury impressions with red fruits and sweetness.

The whisky initially matures in former bourbon casks before receiving its port finish. It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration. Its precise origin within Islay remains a secret: the distillery is not named.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Sweetish peat smoke shapes the nose, accompanied by smoked bacon and summer fruits.
• Palate: The sweet smoke intensifies on the palate. Delicate raspberry and strawberry notes accompany the mouth-filling, almost chewy peat character and an impression of old leather.
• Finish: The long finish recalls the ashes of a peat fire. Sweetness only emerges late.

Distillery/Bottler:

Behind Finlaggan is The Vintage Malt Whisky Company Limited, based in Milngavie near Glasgow. Brian Crook founded the company in 1992 after many years working in whisky exports. His aim was to make malts from various Scottish distilleries accessible to independent wine and spirits importers as well. Alongside Finlaggan, the independent bottler’s range includes other Islay brands such as The Ileach and Islay Storm, as well as the single-cask series The Cooper’s Choice.

The name Finlaggan refers to the historic seat of power of the Macdonald Lords of the Isles at Loch Finlaggan. From the islands in the loch, they ruled the Hebrides and parts of Scotland’s west coast. The whisky itself comes from an unnamed Islay distillery and is independently bottled under the Finlaggan name.
