Special Features:

Seven decades in a First Fill Sherry Butt shaped this Glen Grant from Gordon & MacPhail's Private Collection. Distilled on 11 June 1948, the single malt matured in cask 2154 and was bottled on 19 October 2018 at seventy years old. The single cask yielded 210 bottles at a natural cask strength of 48.6%. At the time of its release, no older Glen Grant whisky had been bottled.

Fruity sweetness, layered spice notes and mature oak combine with a subtle trace of smoke. The amber-coloured whisky was bottled without colouring or chill filtration. The 0.7-litre bottle features fluted glass and a gold label; its wooden presentation case has a geometric pattern in contrasting wood tones.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The whisky opens with sweet vanilla fudge aromas and delicate strawberry and raspberry notes that develop into rich apricot jam. Hints of wax polish then emerge, combining with cinnamon and candied orange peel. Gentle, lingering traces of smoke accompany balanced notes of mature oak. A subtle, fresh mint note appears over time.
  • Palate: The whisky feels soft on the palate. Subtle notes of fruit steeped in sherry combine with fresh orange peel and delicate cardamom tones. A lightly dried-herb note develops, giving way to mouth-warming cracked black pepper and aniseed. Delicate smoke remains present.
  • Finish: The soft finish lingers, revealing delicate notes of charred oak and brief citrus accents.

Distillery/Bottler:

John and James Grant founded Glen Grant in Rothes, Speyside, in 1840. The distillery draws its water from the Caperdonich Well. Its distinctive distillation equipment includes unusually shaped stills with an almost square section between the pot and neck, as well as purifiers on the vapour pipes. These additional purification devices contribute to the light, fruity and gentle house style.

Gordon & MacPhail is responsible for this Private Collection bottling. The company has its roots in a shop on South Street in Elgin that dates back to 1895. For the Private Collection, the directors, including members of the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family, select exceptional casks. Their focus is on individual character and the maturity achieved; single-cask bottlings carry the cask number and vintage and are released at natural cask strength.
