Special Features:

Maturation in sherry casks connects this Glenlivet with Gordon & MacPhail's long tradition of cask ageing. The single malt was distilled in Speyside in 1946 and bottled by the independent bottler at 40%. Floral touches, herbs and a delicate smoky note accompany its fruitiness.

The historic label bears the name George & J.G. Smith's and depicts a reclining lion. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a wooden box with a transparent sliding lid.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose reveals fresh summer fruits and citrus notes, accompanied by sweet spices and vanilla. Floral touches round out the aromas.
  • Palate: On the palate, fruity sweetness combines with a vegetal nuance and fresh herbs. The whisky is rounded and lightly smoky, with a hint of oak adding to the flavour.
  • Finish: The long finish lingers with honeyed sweetness and a subtle woody note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenlivet's history begins with George Smith, who obtained the first distilling licence in the Glenlivet valley in 1824. In 1859, he moved production to Minmore, the distillery's current location, and founded George and J.G. Smith Co. with his son John Gordon. The family name on the label recalls these origins.

Gordon & MacPhail began in 1895 as a grocery, wine and spirits merchant in Elgin. James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail added Speyside single malts to their range early on. John Urquhart joined as an apprentice and later developed the selection and maturation of the company's own whisky stocks; his son George continued this work. Matching the spirit to the right oak cask was central to their approach.

Gordon & MacPhail maintained longstanding relationships with the producers behind its historic distillery labels. The company arranged for their spirits to be filled into its own casks, oversaw maturation and released the whiskies with individual labels for each distillery. This collaboration shapes the Distillery Labels range and the associated Rare Vintage collection.
